Cardinals pick up two wins on Sunday

FLANDREAU – The Flandreau Cardinals hosted a split doubleheader on Sunday and came away with two victories.
The Cardinals beat the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks 11-5 in the first game of the day and then defeated the Colman A’s 9-7 in extra innings in game two. Flandreau is now 9-7 on the season.

The Cardinals had 13 hits as a team and that powered them to a victory in the first game of the day.
The Wood Ducks scored a run on a passed ball in the top of the first, but the Cardinals were able to score two runs in the bottom of the inning. Austin Koenig led off the inning with a double and then scored on a double from Bret Severtson. Severtson then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 heading into the second.
Flandreau extended the lead to 6-1 in the third. Koenig led off the inning with another double and scored on a single from Bret Severtson. A single from Keith Cutler and a fielder’s choice from JaColby Anderson loaded the bases with no outs. Severtson scored on a wild pitch and Tim Huber hit a sacrifice fly to score Cutler. Luke Gassman then hit an RBI single to give the Cardinals a five-run lead.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the fifth. Gassman and Kellan Culbert led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Devon Burgraff walked to load the bases. Koenig was then walked and Severtson hit a two-run single to make it 9-1 heading into the sixth.
The Wood Ducks scored three runs in the top of the sixth. The first two runs came on two RBI singles and then a run from an error made it 9-4.
Flandreau responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Gassman hit a one-out single and then Devon Burggraff walked to put two runners on with two outs. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a Beau Severtson single to make it 11-4.

Hartford/Humboldt scored a run on a ground out in the top of the ninth, but that was it and the Cardinals came away with the win.
Bret Severtson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Beau Severtson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gassman 3-for-4 with an RBI and Koenig was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Devon Burgraff was 1-for-2 and Culbert was 1-for-4.
Dallas Schneiderman pitched the first five innings for the Cardinals. He gave up one unearned run on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Drew Weber pitched the final two innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Flandreau came back from four runs and Koenig hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals the lead and they hung on for the victory in the second game of the day.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Bret Severtson hit a one-out single for Flandreau and Cutler walked. Bret Severtson scored on a ground out from JaColby Anderson and Cutler scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. A two-run home run from Ian Barker in the bottom of the inning then made it 2-2.
Colman then took the lead in the fourth inning. The first batter of the inning was hit by a pitch and then the next batter hit a single. Back-to-back RBI singles then made it 4-2. Another RBI single and a run on a wild pitch made it 6-2 heading into the fifth.
Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth and Huber walked. Gassman then hit a single to load the bases up with no outs and Tison Burggraff was then hit by a pitch to make it 6-3.
Flandreau then tied the game in the seventh. Anderson reached on an error with two outs and then Huber hit one over the centerfield wall to make it 6-5. Gassman then hit a single and stole second base. He then came home on a single from Schneiderman to tie the game.

Colman was unable to score in the bottom of the inning and that led to the Cardinals getting the extra-inning victory. Tison Burgraff was put on second at the beginning of the inning and came home on the double from Koenig. Koenig then scored on an error to make it 8-6. Anderson then hit an RBI double to make it 9-6.
Colman scored a run on a double to start the bottom of the inning but was unable to score any more runs.
Each team had eight hits. Huber went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Anderson was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Koenig was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Schneiderman was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Gassman was 3-for-5 and Bret Severtson was 1-for-4. Tison Burgraff had an RBI without a hit.
Anderson got the start for the Cardinals and pitched one inning. He gave up two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout. Bret Severtson then pitched the final seven innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
