FLANDREAU – The Flandreau Fliers remained unbeaten as they grinded out a victory over the Parker Pheasants Friday night on Jim “Tiger” McGlone Field.
Flandreau jumped out to an early lead and used this momentum to earn their third win of the year with a 19-6 defeat of the Parker Pheasants.
“We got the job done; it was a tough one this week, but our boys played well,” said Head Coach Josh Edlund.
Ben Ballard started the night on a high note for the Fliers taking the opening kickoff about 75 yards for the first score and the Fliers were never threatened the rest of the night.
Xavier Bien kicked the extra point to place the score 7-0 after 13 seconds of play.
Flandreau scored next after a 68 yard drive when Paul Parsley found Kody Kneebone with a five-yard pass at the :08 mark to set the score at 13-0 after one period. The PAT kick failed.
With 8:18 left in the half, Flier Alex Poitra ran in from six yards out capping off a 61 yard drive. The 2-point conversion run was just short.
This would be all the Flier scoring in the game, but it was just enough.
Parker scored just under two minutes left in the half on third and goal from the one using a run, but their PAT was no good.
“We have things to work on both as coaches and players, but it was another good team win for us,” said Edlund.
Edlund saw a lot of good from many different players.
“Alex Poitra ran and caught the ball well,” said Edlund.
“Our defensive backs read and saw well and had a couple picks on the day. Luke Sheppard had a big day on offense and defense. Cam Flute, Kody Kneebone, and Micah Otto all had great nights.”
The Fliers had 209 total yards of offense coming from 139 yards on the ground and 80 through passing.
Quarterback Parsley was 10-of-18 in passing including the touchdown toss. He also carried the ball nine times for 47 ground yards.
His top receivers were Kody Kneebone earning 26 yards on three catches and the touchdown and Luke Sheppard with two grabs for 25 yards.
On the ground, Alex Poitra also had three carries for 27 yards and his score, and Ballard had eight carries for 39 yards.
The defensive effort was led by Justin Klein with 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss, and he was also credited for a sack with his teammate Karter Headrick. Parsley made 10 tackles, and Headrick had seven.
Two astray Pheasant passes were intercepted by Sheppard and Otto stopping Parker’s drives.
“We are excited about our guys and the opportunities they have worked for.”
Friday, Flandreau hosts 0-3 Sisseton, a new team to their schedule, in the annual Homecoming game. Tailgating with the Flier Booster Club starts at 5 p.m. on the Practice Football Field.

After early deadline for September 4 issue
FLANDREAU – The Flandreau Flier gridders improved to 2-0 with a 30-point victory over the Baltic Bulldogs using six different players to compile their points. Final score was 42-12.
Flandreau had 428 yards of total offense, 14 first downs and had ball possession most of the game. Baltic had one first down. Other Bulldog stats were unavailable.
“Our offensive and defensive lines really started to win the battles in the trenches and that was huge for us. Overall, (it was) a good team win,” said Head Coach Josh Edlund.
The Fliers’ first quarter scoring drive took 2:17 and covered 90 yards when Parsley connected with Alex Poitra up the middle for a 31-yard score.
In the second quarter, Parsley found Kody Kneebone for a 49-yard touchdown that completed an 80 yard drive over 3:20.
Ten plays and 63 yards later, senior Ben Ballard ran in for a six-yard score and then at the 1:11 mark left in the half, Parsley walked in for a one-yard touchdown capping off a seven play, 64 yard drive.

After half time and on the Fliers’ first possession, they drove 80 yards, which included three huge passing plays, before Karter Headrick took the ball over from the three yard line with 6:15 showing on the clock.

The Bulldogs scored the final touchdown when the back up quarterback launched a 69 yard pass to one of his receivers to set the final score at 42-12.
For the Fliers, Xavier Bien was 4-of-5 in extra point kicks missing only the first one. Parsley ran in one two-point conversion.
“Parsley had a great day throwing and running the ball and our receivers did a great job catching and running hard. Micah Otto started us off with a nice catch and our receivers followed suit,” said Edlund.
“We had big plays from several Fliers.”
Parsley was 12-of-20 for 240 yards with two touchdowns. Micah Otto had three catches for 68 yards and Poitra had three for 51 yards and the touchdown. Kneebone had one catch for 49 yards and a touchdown. Ballard had 38 yards on two catches.
