Flandreau junior Faith Wiese started out her junior cross country season taking first place from a field of 49 runners at the McCook Central/Montrose cross country meet September 3.
A few Fliers participated in the Augustana University hosted Twilight Meet on Friday evening.
McCook Central/Montrose
Chamberlain won the girls division with a low 15 points and Madison took the boys with 19. Both Flier varsity teams took second. The girls scored 21 and the boys 27.
Girls
Wiese’s time, 19:16.73, was well over a minute faster than the second place runner.
Josie Hamilton took eighth for the Fliers in a time of 22:43.28 and Kiley Westberry was 16th, 23:14.28. Just out of medal contention was Morgan Sheppard with a 23rd place finish at 24:34.27.
Augustana Twilight Meet
Flandreau took three girls and four boys to the annual Augustana Twilight Meet ran Friday evening September 6 in Sioux Falls. There were runners from all three South Dakota classes as well as runners from several area states.
From the field of 325 runners, the Fliers’ Faith Wiese turned in a time of 18:03.74 coming in eighth overall. From just the Class A runners, she arrived in the chute in fourth place.
Also in the girls 5000 meter race, Kiley Westberry (151st) ran to a time of 21:13.80. Junior Hailey Lahr (291st) ran her fastest time in two years at the meet coming in the chute at 23:27.08.
For the boys, there were 430 runners. Brenton Westberry ran to an 18:31.29 time (290th), Logan Kontz’s time was 19:00.71 which was a minute better than last year and good for 232nd place. Kaden Burshiem (353rd) turned in a time of 19:11.68 and Wyatt Kontz (358th) also knocked off 60 seconds from last season’s race with his time of 19:15.64 over the 5000 meters.
On September 10, the teams were to be in Garretson for the Jesse James Invitational and then travel to Milbank for the Grandstay Invite on Saturday. Monday, they’ll head north to the Lake Region Golf Course for the Arlington Invitational.
