Flandreau routes Sisseton in shut out homecoming win

FLANDREAU – Flandreau scored 40 points in the first half to pick up a decisive homecoming win, 47-0, over the Redmen on Friday night.
“Our boys played very well tonight,” Flandreau head coach Josh Edlund said. “Our focus as a team this week in practice was perfecting our craft. We didn’t add much or change much, we were just focused on playing cleaner football and we were able to accomplish that.”
The Fliers scored 21 points in the first quarter and 19 points in the second quarter. By adding seven points in the third, Flandreau was able to provide their reserves with some experience in the late stages of what Edlund referred to as a team victory.
Most of the varsity starters were on the sidelines for the second half of the game.
“We had a great day on offense,” Edlund said. “We were able to get a lot of our guys some experience this week. Gabe Frias and Tate Hammer did well running the ball (in second half). Our offensive line had its way and was clearing the path for all of the running backs tonight. The offensive line really played a clean game with no penalties.”
Junior Alex Poitra had four touchdowns for the Fliers adding 47 yards on the ground from five carries and earned 34 yards through the air from two passes.

He scored twice in the first period. Once at the 3:01 mark on a 1 yard run and also, after Sisseton fumbled the ensuing kick off which Micah Otto recovered on the Redmen 24 yard line, Poitra took a 6 yard Paul Parsley pass across the goal line.
In the second quarter, Poitra grabbed a 28 yard touchdown pass from Parsley and at the 1:10 mark, ran a 24 yard score in for the Fliers.
Cam Flute had 67 rushing yards and his first varsity touchdown on five carries. Flute’s touchdown was set up after he gained 43 yards to bring the Fliers down to the Redmen’s seven before he was given the ball again to cross the goal line on the next play. Junior Luke Sheppard caught a pair of passes for 69 yards including a second quarter 42 yard touchdown.
The Fliers had a defensive score when Micah Otto returned an interception for a 37 yard first quarter touchdown. He also had a fumble recovery.
Xavier Bien rounded out the scoring for the Fliers punching through five extra point kicks.
At quarterback, Parsley completed 5-of-8 passes for 113 yards and threw three touchdowns.
Justin Klein led the Flier defense with five solo tackles and two assists. Gauge Ballard had a solo tackle, two assists and a sack.
Just like the offense, Edlund believed the Fliers’ effort on defense was a total team effort and aided by a strong job by the coaching staff.
“Coach Parsley had high goals for our defense and prepared them well to achieve those goals,” Edlund said. “Coach Carr did a really nice job of calling plays and putting our players in a great position to succeed. Coach Peters is our “eyes in the sky” and special teams coordinator. He did a great job preparing our team as well.”
“I am really proud of the team and my coaches. The work they have been putting in is evident on Friday nights.”
The Fliers improved to 4-0 on the season and will travel to Salem to face the 2-2 McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
