Hawks trounce Cardinals

COLMAN – The Hawks won over Arlington in the last home game of the season taking a 56-6 win.
After starting out the season playing three of the top five teams in Class 9B, this win moves their record to 3-4.
Since losing to Avon, Canistota and Dell Rapids St. Mary, the Hawks have won three of the last four games they’ve played.
Jack Mousel was a part of five Hawk touchdowns. The quarterback scored on a runs of 64, 21, 6 and 60 yards and threw passes of 20 and 27 yards to Jackson Zwart.
Hayden Pearson scored on runs of 14 and 4 yards.
Mousel led in rushing carrying the ball eight time for 164 yards and was 7-of-8 in passing for another 108 yards. Zwart caught six total receptions for 102.
Arlington’s lone score came from a 21 yard run, but through the game, they only garnered 26 yards on the ground.
Jase Mousel led the Hawks with nine tackles. Thomas Loehr and Carson Voelker both had five and Rhyder Behnke had a tackle and an interception to top the defensive effort.
The last game of the season is Friday on the Lake Preston football field where they’ll take on the 1-6 Iroquois-Lake Preston team.

Fliers fall short against EPJ

ELK POINT – Using their theme of “No Quit,” the Flandreau Flier football team stayed right in the game with the number three team in Class 11B, but fell a touchdown short of the win.
Elk Point-Jefferson topped the Fliers, 21-14, last Friday in a game where Flier Coach Josh Edlund says his team never gave up and kept fighting until the end.
“Our boys played a tremendous game,” said Edlund.
“We stood toe to toe with the current number three team in the state in 11B. I am so proud of our guys for being mentally tough and sticking with it; good things are coming for this group.”
Offensively, Edlund said quarterback Paul Parsley led the charge.
“Parsley threw the ball to a lot of different playmakers,” he said. “Luke Sheppard had four great catches (71 yards) and Cam Flute had some great catches (4 for 59 yards).”
Also through the air, Micah Otto grabbed two passes for 35 yards gained and Kody Kneebone and Karter Headrick each had two catches for 18 and eight yards respectively.
Parsley was 16 of 25 in passing for 239 yards including a touchdown to Ben Ballard who caught two passes for 48 yards.
“We were moving the ball well with a solid mix of run and pass, our offensive line was giving Paul enough time to either throw or make a play with his legs. We had a few mistakes here and there, gave them a short field once and they took advantage of it.”
On the ground, Parsley kept the ball five times earning 31 yards and touchdown and Ballard had four carries for 12 yards. Up the middle Headrick had 10 carries for nine yards, and Flute had two rushes for eight yards.
Edlund noted, “Defensively we played awesome; we stuffed a lot of their plays for short gains, we made them punt, we had good eyes in the defensive backfield. Kody Kneebone was eating up blocks and making tackles at the same time. Karter Headrick was taking on triple teams and winning, Luke Sheppard was filling holes with tenacity. EPJ had an eye out for Justin Klein, our current leader in tackles but he took on those blocks so others could make the play. Defensively we had maybe two mistakes, but other than that our boys played some really good football.”
On that defensive note, Ballard made 13 tackles and Kneebone and Sheppard each had seven.
“I am incredibly proud of them for their efforts. We have a tough matchup next in Beresford, but we have proven that we can play with anybody in the state. Starting (with) another work week on Monday, (it’s) time to get to work for Beresford,” he concluded.
Kickoff is 7 pm on the Watchdog Field.
