Flier girls cross country team takes back BEC title

Boys' attempt at three peat falls short

The Flandreau girls cross country team took first in the Big East Conference meet held Thurdsay, October 10 and third in the Lake Central Conference while the boys team finished third in both meets.
It was the first Big East meet win for the Flier girls since 2021.
Both varsity teams are now preparing to take part in the SDHSAA Region 2A Cross Country Meet in Volga on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

BEC - October 10
GARRETSON – The Flandreau Fliers won the girls championship and the Sioux Valley Cossacks won the boys title at the Big East Conference Meet at the River Ridge Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
Sioux Valley’s Carson Wosje and Flandreau’s Faith Wiese won individual titles at the meet held under warm sunny skies.
Girls
The Flier girls, led all year by their junior runner Faith Wiese, finished first in the girls’ race with 17 points, reclaiming the title from Sioux Valley. Flandreau placed second in 2023 and 2022. The Fliers won the title in 2021 and 2020, and also from 2015-2018 making them the champions in seven of the last 10 years of the race.
All Flier runners were named to the All-Conference team (top 15).
Wiese topped all runners posting a time of 18:43.27, a minute, 41 seconds better than second place. Three more Flier runners finished in the top 10 as seventh grader Calla Wiese finished fifth with a time of 21:12.55, sophomore Kiley Westberry finished seventh with a time of 21:17.17 and senior Josie Hamilton finished ninth with a time of 21:58.50.
Another seventh grader, Tenley LeBrun, finished 11th with a time of 22:18.43 and eighth grader Morgan Sheppard finished 14th with a time of 22:45.84.
Sioux Valley took second with 30 points, Beresford third at 51 and Baltic scored 56 points for fourth. Chester and McCook Central/Montrose didn’t field full teams and Garretson did not have any participants.
Boys
The Flier boys had hopes of a three-peat title, but finished in third place with 36 points and had three runners in the top 15.

Wyatt Kontz finished eighth with a time of 19:05.77 while Logan Kontz finished ninth with a time of 19:12.05 and Brenton Westberry finished 10th with a time of 19:25.23.
Sam Schmidt finished 13th with a time of 19:41.17; Nathaniel Hobbie finished 14th with a time of 19:42.99. Daniel Hobbie finished 22nd with a time of 20:29.37.
Sioux Valley won the team title with a score of 23 and Beresford was second with 32. Following Flandreau, Garretson came in fourth with 74 points, Baltic, fifth at 80 and McCook Central Montrose, sixth with 107 points. Chester only had one runner in the race.
JV
The Fliers swept the JV 4,000 meter races as both teams took first place. The girls scored 22 and the boys team scored 10 gobbling up the top four place finishes.
For the girls, the team bunched up and took the fourth through eighth places. Diamond Roy finished the race in 18:09.91 for fourth, Trisha Roy was fifth at 19:25.71, Hailey Lahr was sixth, 19:25.91, Isabel Kulm took seventh (19:32.41) and Dreamer Cournoyer was eighth with 19:59.15.
On the boys side, taking the one through four positions were Teague Bergjord, 15:15.68, Franklin Donis Castillo, 15:15.85, Ben Kulm, 15:39.55, and Kaden Burshiem, 15:46.18. Kenton James came in a couple spots later for sixth place, 15:55.38.

LCC - October 7
CLEAR LAKE – Earlier in the week, Wosje and Wiese won medalist honors at the Lake Central Conference Cross Country Meet at the Clear Lake Golf Course on Monday, October 7.
Girls
Wiese won the girls 5000 meter race with a time of 18:19.24. The Fliers came in third as a team with 23 points. Clark/Willow Lake came in first place as a team with 16 points, outlasting Deuel who came in second with 17.
Calla Wiese came in ninth (21:13.37) for the only other Flier runner to earn All-Conference (top 12).
Josie Hamilton came in 13th (21:43.93), Morgan Sheppard finished in 15th (22:04.85), Tenley LeBrun came in 16th (22:15.56) and Kiley Westberry came in 17th (22:21.85).
Boys

Wosje won the race with a time of 17:05.48. Deuel won the team portion with nine points and the Flandreau boys were third with 23.
Brenton Westberry came in sixth (18:10.35) and Logan Kontz came in seventh (18:11.23) for the Fliers earning All-Conference.
Daniel Hobbie finished in 13th (19:18.60), Sam Schmidt came in 15th (19:31.45) and Nathaniel Hobbie rounded things out for the Fliers, coming in 24th (21:52.50).
JV teams
The Fliers won both the girls and boys JV races with the girls scoring a low 12 points and the boys scored six over 3,000 meter course.
Dreamer Cournoyer was first into the chute for the girls taking fourth place at 13:10.35 and Diamond Roy was fifth, 13:11.06.
Hailey Lahr took seventh and Trisha Roy was eighth. Rona Streitz came in 12th.
The Cossacks scored 18 to take second place.
For the boys JV team, the Fliers swept the top four positions.
Wyatt Kontz won the boys JV race in a time of 10:40.70, followed by Kenton James (10:50.65), Ben Kulm (10:52.25 and Logan Kontz (10:57.40).
Franklin Donis Castillo was eighth (11:35.49 and Pedro Barona was ninth (11:41.02). Following them was Kaden Burshiem in 11th and Creighton Arnett in 13th.
Sioux Valley came in second with a score of 28.
