Flandreau stifles Hill City to earn trip to Class A state tournament

Nine-minute stretch in first half helps Flandreau earn 58-30 win in SoDak 16 on Thursday

CHAMBERLAIN — The Flandreau Fliers smothered Hill City as they used a 58-30 win in the SoDak 16 to return to the Class A state tournament in Brookings next weekend.

“We had an awesome crowd in Chamberlain,” Flandreau head coach Megan Severtson said. “It felt like a home game. We are so thankful for the support and look forward to seeing everyone in Brookings.”

The Fliers led from wire-to-wire in the game turning a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 34-13 lead at halftime thanks to a nine-minute stretch in the first half where Flandreau held the Bears to two points. 

Flandreau’s lead ballooned to 46-22 at the end of the third quarter and the Fliers had a 12-8 advantage in the fourth quarter to secure another trip to the state tournament.

Lily Klein led Flandreau with 15 points while Morgan Sheppard had 13 points and Lizzie Pavlis had 11 points. Claire Sheppard also had 10 points, Sadie Iott had seven points and Hannah Krull had two points.

Flandreau improved to 23-0 with the win and will face sixth-seeded Tea Area (19-4) in their first game of the state tournament at the Dacotah Bank Center on March 7 at 7:45 p.m.
