Thomas E. Jueschke, age 79, of Flandreau, SD, passed away Friday, January 13, 2017, surrounded by his family, in his own home, from Lewy Body Dementia.

Thomas Eugene Jueschke was born October 2, 1937, in Tonkawa, OK, to Virgil and Catherine (Swords) Jueschke. Tom graduated from Tonkawa High School, Northern Oklahoma Junior College, Oklahoma State University, and then the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Stillwater, OK. He met his future wife, Deanna Humes, at OSU, and they were married on August 27, 1960, in Ponca City, OK. In June of 1962 he and his family moved to Flandreau, SD. He joined the Halvorson and Ludgate Veterinary Medicine Clinic, and in 1964 became a full partner in the practice. Tom continued to practice in Moody County and surrounding areas with Dr. Tom Ludgate until 1977 when Dr. Jueschke purchased the practice and built the Flandreau Veterinary Clinic on the west side of Flandreau. He then practiced alone 24/7 another 36 years, except for 2 years when Dr. Chris Chase came to work for him, and then the 2 years Dr. Kris Fairbanks worked for him. The 51 years Tom practiced brought major changes not only to Veterinary Medicine, but to farming in general. He always said he was grateful he was able to be a large animal practitioner when there were four family farms, (each with a menagerie of animals), to a section, as opposed to four sections for one farm. As the years passed, he became more a small animal practitioner, and came to love the change. Tom served in the National Guard, was elected to the honorary academic Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity, a member of the Alpha Psi Fraternity, the AVMA, a 40 year member of the B & PO of the Elks, and served 2 terms on both the Flandreau School Board and the Flandreau Hospital Board. Tom was appointed to the National Veterinary Medicine Biological Terrorist Attack Preparedness Planning Committee and served for 6 years. His passions, after veterinary medicine, were fishing, gardening, hunting and woodworking, always with Rily and Woody, his constant companions. Tom is survived by his wife Deanna, his daughter Tara Jueschke and her spouse Cecile Cloete of League City, TX; brother Charles (Barbara) Jueschke, Kansas City, MO; sisters, Marilyn (Vergil) Johnson, Ullyses, KS; and Patricia (Tom) Sipe, Ponca City, OK; brothers-inlaw, James (Nola) Humes, Ft. Dodge, IA; and E. Eugene (Ann) Humes, Owasso, OK; plus many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his son David Michael Jueschke, his parents Virgil and Catherine Jueschke and in-laws David (Ted) and Helen Humes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel followed by a memory service at 7:00 p.m. Please come share and enjoy memories of the life of Doc.
