James “Jim” Richard Carroll, 78, of Colman, passed away Friday, June 4, 2021, at his home under hospice care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at St. Peter Catholic Church, in Colman.
James “Jim” Richard Carroll was born on a family farm in rural DeSmet on September 21st, 1942, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Pitman) Carroll. He graduated from DeSmet High School in 1960 and then received a degree in automotive technology at North Dakota State College of Science.  Jim then went on to work at Williamson Garage in DeSmet and Sands Electric in Brookings. He served in Vietnam as a mechanic from 1964 until his honorable discharge in 1966. Jim married Lane Dannenbring in DeSmet on May 1st, 1976 and made their home in rural Colman, SD and had five children. Jim then became part owner of Service Electric in 1976 and later sole owner until he retired in 2005. He was proud to have each of his kids work with him in his shop.
Jim enjoyed working on old tractors, helping farm in the spring and fall, hunting and fishing trips, Card Club with neighbors, Solitaire, spending time with grandchildren and tinkering in his shop alongside his dog, Ellie. Jim was also a member of the Badger Saddle Club, NRA, Knights of Columbus, Saint Peter Catholic Church Council, and Freemont Township Board.
Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years Lane Carroll; his children, Matt (Candace) Carroll of Rutland, SD, Tim (Stephanie) Carroll of Brookings, SD, Jenny (Doug) Welbig of Armstrong IA, Pat (Amy) Carroll of Flandreau, SD, and Jeff (Kristi Humphrey) Carroll of Flandreau, SD; his grandchildren, Jacey, Alyssa, and Owen Welbig, Cooper and Brielle Carroll, Waylon, Whitney, Warner ‘Bob’ Carroll; his brothers, Don and Bob Carroll and his sister Kay Tiggelaar.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Carroll and his brother Bill Carroll.
