Duane E. Hartman, age 75, of Colman, SD, passed away December 26, 2016 at home doing his cattle chores.
Duane Edward was born January 25, 1941 at Pipestone, MN to Norman and Mary (Wieme) Hartman. They iived by Trosky, MN, until he was six years old when they moved to a farm nine miles north of Colman. He went to Rutland School. He had to try something a little different so he went to work for Hanson Silo Company building silos in southern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota working alongside his friend Ray Hammer. Duane was in the National Guard for two years. He purchased a farm one mile south of his parents in 1964 where he continued to farm and live the rest of his life. He married Judy (Pittenger) on June 25, 1966 in Brookings, SD. To this union five children were born. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 25, 2016. Duane operated and enjoyed John Deere tractors which he had a real collection and a toy collection and enjoyed Willie Nelson songs. He enjoyed raising pigs and was very fond of German Shepherds, especially the white German Shepherds.
Duane is survived by his wife Judy of 50 years; five children, Dan (Beth) Hartman of Brookings, Debra (Lewis) Patterson of Colman, David Hartman of Black Hawk, Deanna (Boyd Meyer) Hartman of Brookings and Dawn (Donald) Eppe of Howard; six grandchildren: Janie Hartman, Andrew Hartman, Adam Hartman, Samuel Meyer, Hanna Eppe and Tanner Eppe; two sisters: Carol (Kenny) Haugen from Georgia and Delores Stevenson of Volga; and many nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Norma Klingbile, three brothers-in-law, and his companion Frank, a white German Shepherd.
Funeral service was held Friday, December 30, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colman.
