Seven area grapplers qualify for state tournament

BROOKINGS — Seven area wrestlers have qualified for this year’s SDHSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament, which will take place Thursday through Saturday at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.

The Brookings Bobcats lead the way with five qualifiers, including top seeds Johanna Steinlicht and Maizy Mathis.

Steinlicht, the top seed at 145 pounds, has a perfect 29-0 record this season while Maizy Mathis is the top seed at 165 pounds after posting a 21-2 record this year.

Lily Toft will represent the Bobcats at 107 pounds after going 14-6 this season and Bailey Tekrony will wrestle for Brookings at 114 pounds after finishing with a 16-7 record this season. Cierra Strand will also represent the Bobcats with a 23-10 record at 132 pounds.

Sioux Valley’s Summer Guthmiller is also a top seed in this year’s tournament, qualifying with a 36-3 record at 132 pounds.

Flandreau’s Julie Pitsenberger also qualified for the tournament with an 11-10 record and will wrestle at 132 pounds.

First-round matches for this year’s tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.
