Fourth place at State B volleyball tourney

HURON – Colman-Egan dropped a heartbreaker to cap its debut in the Class B State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Huron Arena.
Third-seeded Chester Area (23-3) defeated the fourth-seeded Hawks (25-5) by the set scores of 13-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-12 in the third-place match.
Breckyn Ewoldt totaled 22 kills in the victory.
Jayda Kenyon added 10 kills, 2 1/2 blocks and a service ace.
Kenna Brown guided the offense with 44 set assists and paced the defense with 28 digs. Emery Larson chipped in with 22 digs and Kaylor Geraets 17.
For CE, Olivia Baumberger racked up 19 kills and 5 1/2 blocks (three solo) to go with 14 digs.
Hailey Larson contributed 11 kills, three aces and a pair of blocks.
Mackenzie Hemmer ended up with 13 kills, 1 1/2 blocks and 10 digs.
Braiden Westley (21) and Kennedi Landis (19) combined for 40 set assists. Westley notched 14 digs and Landis eight.
Notes: Chester Area was the only Class B team to beat Colman-Egan in the regular season.

Opening round
HURON – Colman-Egan made the most of its debut in the Class B State Volleyball Tournament, defeating Bridgewater-Emery 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Huron Arena.
“The girls came in with some nerves – that showed in the first set,” said CE coach Abigail Dockter. “They overcame the nerves and started playing their game, which allowed us to come out with a win.”
Dakota Valley Conference Co-MVP Olivia Baumberger led the way with another big match, logging 17 kills, 3 1/2 blocks (three solo), three service aces, 15 digs and a set assist.
Mackenzie Hemmer racked up 16 kills while adding a block, an ace, 17 digs and a pair of set assists.
Hailey Larson also reached double figures with nine kills and a solo block. She notched six digs.
Braiden Westley guided the offense with 31 set assists and paced the defense with 29 digs. Kennedi Landis chipped in with 11 set assists. Elizabeth Moore came up with 16 digs.
Bridgewater-Emery finished in sixth place in the tournament.
Semifinals
The Northwestern Wildcats defeated the Hawks, 3-0 in sets of 25-18, 25-19, 25-20 on Friday. The Wildcats, seeded number 1 in the State B tourney, went on to win the Class B title over Warner, 3-1.
Sydney Schell paced Northwestern with 23 kills, a solo block and six digs.
Hannah Schentzel added 14 kills, an ace, a block assist and 15 digs.
Brooklinn Halvorson guided the offense with 30 set assists. Joclyn Haven came up with 15 digs.
Colman-Egan’s Mackenzie Hemmer finished with 15 kills, a solo block and 10 digs.
Olivia Baumberger had five kills, 3 1/2 blocks (two solo) and eight digs.
Braiden Westley dished out 18 set assists, while Elizabeth Moore notched 12 digs.
