Cardinals suffer tough losses on the diamond

The Flandreau Cardinals dropped four games that they played this week. The Cardinals lost to the Garretson Blue Jays on Monday, the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks on Tuesday, Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday and the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Sunday.

Cardinals suffer tough losses on the diamond

The Flandreau Cardinals dropped four games that they played this week. The Cardinals lost to the Garretson Blue Jays on Monday, the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks on Tuesday, Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday and the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Sunday.

Monday, July 8
Garretson 4, Flandreau 2
Garretson scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and then held Flandreau scoreless in the seventh to get the win.
Neither team scored in the first four innings and then both teams scored two runs in the fifth. Two walks and an error allowed the Cardinals to load the bases with one out. Austin Koenig then hit Tison Burgraff home with a fly out to make it 1-0. Keith Cutler followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. The Blue Jays scored a run on a single and a run on an error to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
The two runs in the sixth from Garretson came from a single. The Cardinals went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh.
Flandreau had five hits. Cutler was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Josh Edlund was 3-for-3. Drew Weber got the start for the Cardinals and gave up two unearned runs in five innings of work. He gave up six hits and had two strikeouts and no walks. Luke Gassman pitched the final inning and gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Tuesday, July 9
Hartford/Humboldt 6, Flandreau 2
The Cardinals offense couldn’t get it going again on Tuesday as they had five hits again.
The Gamecocks led 4-0 after the first three innings. They scored two runs in both the second and the third. The first two runs came from a home run and then a two-run double put them up four.

Flandreau got on the board in the top of the fourth when Edlund hit an RBI single. The Gamecocks answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to four. A two-run single in the seventh made it 6-1.
Koenig hit a one-out single in the eighth and then scored on a Bret Severtson single but the Cardinals were unable to score any more runs.
Koenig was 2-for-3 and Severtson was 1-for-2. Edlund and Jacob Patterson were each 1-for-3.
Z Wallner pitched the first seven innings and gave up six earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Curt Anderson pitched one innings and gave no runs and two hits with one strikeout.

Thursday, July 11
Dell Rapids PBR 6, Flandreau 5
PBR scored two runs in the eighth to gain the lead and held the Cardinals scoreless in the ninth.
Flandreau led 2-1 after the first inning. Patterson led off the game with a single and Cutler hit a one-out single to put two runners on. Patterson scored on a JaColby Anderson single and Severtson followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 2-0. Dell Rapids scored a run on a ground out in the bottom of the inning.
An RBI double from Gassman pushed the lead to 3-1 in the third. Severtson then hit a solo home run in the fifth to make it 4-1. Patterson hit a one-out single in the sixth and scored on a single from Cutler, which made it 5-1.
PBR cut the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth. The first run of the inning came from a home run. Runs from a single and ground out then made it 5-4 heading into the seventh.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for PBR in the eighth. A two run single with two outs then gave Dell Rapids the lead. Cutler walked to lead off the ninth but the next three batters went down in order and the Cardinals lost again.

Flandreau had 14 hits. Severtson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Cutler was 2-for-4 with an RBI. JaColby Anderson and Gassman were each 2-for-5 with an RBI. B McGuire and Z Wallner were each 1-for-4 and Koenig was 1-for-5.
D Schneiderman pitched the first five innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Severtson pitched two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Sunday, July 14
Dell Rapids Mudcats 6, Flandreau 5
Flandreau fell behind 6-2 on Sunday and scored three runs in the final two innings but came up short.
Dell Rapids led 2-0 at the end of the first. Both runs came on a single. Flandreau answered with two runs in the top of the second. Schneiderman hit a one-out single and Gassman followed with a double. Both runners then scored on a single from Rick Weber.
The Mudcats then pushed the lead back to two in the bottom of the second. One run came from an error and another from a single to make it 4-2. Then a two-run home run in the fourth made it 6-2.
Koenig hit an RBI single in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-3. JaColby Anderson led off the ninth with a double and Severtson followed with a double of his own to make it 6-4. He then scored on a ground out to make it 6-5 but the Cardinals couldn’t get another run home.
The Cardinals had nine hits. Koenig was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Severtson and Gassman were each 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rick Weber was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Wallner was 1-for-4. Schneiderman and JaColby Anderson were each 1-for-3.
Curt Anderson pitched the first five innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Calvin Hegg pitched the final three innings and gave up no runs and two hits with one strikeout.
