SALEM – The Flandreau Cardinals rallied from an early deficit but the Salem Cubs pulled away with three late runs to earn a 6-5 victory on June 16.

The loss dropped the Cardinals to 6-4 on the season.

Cardinals drop two over week

SALEM – The Flandreau Cardinals rallied from an early deficit but the Salem Cubs pulled away with three late runs to earn a 6-5 victory on June 16.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 6-4 on the season.
Flandreau got on the board in the top of the first inning when Bret Severtson hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a single by Keith Cutler. Tim Huber cashed in with a single in the following at-bat and gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead but Salem answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The Cardinals made their way back into the game in the top of the sixth inning when Austin Koenig singled to lead off and Patterson singled after Severtson grounded into a fielder’s choice. Cutler walked to load the bases in the next at-bat and Huber drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game before Rick Weber doubled to drive home two runs and give Flandreau a 4-3 lead.
But the Cubs tied the game on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead on a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Cardinals mounted a rally in the top of the ninth inning after Huber led off with a single and Rick Weber reached on a walk but Brian McGuire’s single was the only run of the inning as Luke Gassman left the winning run on third base when he grounded out to end the game.

Drew Weber started the game for Flandreau, allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Gassman finished the game allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks over the final 1.2 innings.
Jacob Patterson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Huber finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Cutler went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Severtson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored while Koenig, Gassman and McGuire each went 1-for-4. Rick Weber went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Culbert went 1-for-3.

CANOVA – The Flandreau Cardinals fell on the road 8-1 to Canova on Sunday evening. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 6-5 on the year.
Canova scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning but the Cardinals cut the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. JaColby Anderson started the rally with a leadoff single and advanced to second base on a passed ball before Zak Wallner and Josh Edlund struck out for the first two outs.
Curt Anderson drove JaColby Anderson with a double in the next at-bat to make it a 2-1 game but Canova broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning and another run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

JaColby Anderson started on the mound, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Bret Severtson came in to strike out a batter and get the final two outs of the sixth inning while Curt Anderson allowed one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts over the final two innings.
Bret Severtson went 1-for-3 in the game.
