Blue Teal split over week’s action

The Flandreau Blue Teal amateur baseball team is 2-1 on the season after splitting a pair of games this week.
The Blue Teal beat the Harford/Humboldt Wood Ducks 16-3 on Thursday and then lost 10-0 to Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday. Flandreau plays at Madison on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Flandreau 16, Hartford/Humboldt 3 (7 inn.)
FLANDREAU – In the inaugural game on their home field, the Flandreau Blue Teal won over the Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks via the 10 run rule last Thursday. The game was played at The Blind at the Big Sioux Field, the amateur baseball field in Flandreau City Park.
Seven runs in the third inning allowed them to win the seven inning contest.
Flandreau led 2-1 after the first inning. The Wood Ducks scored on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Mason Riley and Kolby Peters hit back-to-back singles with one out and Tash Lunday was walked to load the bases up. Gage Sharping then drew a bases loaded walk and Peters scored on a steal of home to make it 2-1.
Hartford/Humboldt tied the game with a run on an error in the third. But that’s when the Blue Teal broke the game open. Flandreau scored its first run of the inning on an error. The next run came on a wild pitch and a three-run triple from Sam Gassman made it 7-2. Tanner Christenson then hit an RBI double and a run on an error made it 9-2 heading into the fourth.

The Blue Teal added three more runs in the fourth. Ethan Hoffman hit and Paul McGlone hit back-to-back RBI doubles and Christenson hit an RBI single to make it 12-2.
They pushed three more runs across the plate in the fifth. Peters hit an RBI triple and he was hit home on a double from Lunday. Lunday then scored on a throw of a strikeout and the Blue Teal led 15-2 heading into the sixth.
The Wood Ducks final run of the game came on a passed ball in the sixth, but the Blue Teal got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Lunday hit an RBI single and the Wood Ducks were unable to score in the seventh, making the final 16-3.
Flandreau had 16 hits as a team. Gassman was 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Christenson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Lunday was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Peters was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Hoffman was 1-for-4 with an RBI. McGlone was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Sharping was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Blue Teal only gave up five hits, struck out 14 and walked six Wood Ducks.
Brenden Gregory got the start for the Blue Teal and he pitched three innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Hoffman pitched the next three innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. RIley pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and no hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Dell Rapids PBR 10, Flandreau 0 (6 inn.)

DELL RAPIDS – The Blue Teal had six hits but were unable to put any runs on the board. PBR went up 2-0 in the second inning after back-to-back bases loaded walks. An RBI double and a wild pitch added two more runs for PBR in the fourth.
Another RBI double and another bases loaded walk made it 6-0. That was followed by a two-run double and another wild pitch to make it 9-0 heading into the sixth. An RBI single in the sixth ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
Riley was 2-for-3 and Hoffman and Tristan Van Wassenhove were each 1-for-2. Michael Witte and McGlone were each 1-for-3.
Sharping got the start for the Blue Teal and pitched four innings. He gave up four earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Peters was unable to get an out as he gave up four earned runs on one hit with three walks and no strikeouts. Lunday pitched the final inning and gave up two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Thursday, the team is in Madison for a 7:30 p.m. game.
