Girls win two, lose in Hanson Classic

Sheppard nets 1000 career point

The Flandreau girls’ basketball team went 2-1 last week as they stopped a Garretson win streak, blew out Madison and then fell to Class A third ranked St. Thomas More in the Hanson Classic. A highlight of the week was Claire Sheppard scoring over the 1000 point mark in her career.

FLANDREAU – Claire Sheppard scored her 1,000th career point in Flandreau’s 44-29 victory over the Garretson on Tuesday night as she put up 19 points and eight rebounds on the night.
Flandreau trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Fliers would then cut the lead to 19-18 by halftime. Flandreau put together a nice third quarter and led 31-23 at the end of the third. The Fliers then increased their lead in the fourth quarter leading to the victory.,
Lizzie Pavlis had nine points to go with six rebounds and three steals for the Fliers. Lily Klein had nine points, six rebounds and six steals.
Kylie Christensen led Garretson with seven points and Sydney Olson had six points in the loss.
The Fliers JV game won, 27-12 with Morgan Sheppard scoring 13 Flier points.


Flandreau 57, Madison 36
MADISON – Flandreau dominated the first three quarters of the game and that led to the victory. The Fliers jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the first quarter and then led 35-11 at halftime. Flandreau increased its lead to 48-17 by the end of the third and was able to cruise to the win.
Flandreau shot 44.7% from the field and was 3-9 from three. The Fliers were led by Lizzie Pavlis who had 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Claire Sheppard had 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Lily Klein had nine points and five rebounds.
Madison shot 44.1% from the field and was 3-13 from three. The Bulldogs were led by Zoey Gerry who had 17 points. Audrey Nelson had 13 points.
Flandreau had 30 rebounds and Madison had 16. Madison had 18 turnovers and Flandreau had 11.
The JV team won over the Bulldogs, 30-18 led by Grace Krull’s 10 points and Morgan Sheppard’s seven.

St. Thomas More 54, Flandreau 34  
MITCHELL – A strong first half lifted the Cavaliers over the Fliers at the Corn Palace. STM outscored Flandreau 15-10 in the first quarter and then extended its lead to 31-19 by halftime. The Cavaliers would then outscore the Fliers 23-15 in the second half to come away with the victory.
Flandreau shot 36.7% from the field and was 4-11 from three. The Fliers were led by Lily Klein who had 18 points. Lizzie Pavlis had eight points and five rebounds.
STM shot 45% from the field and was 9-20 from beyond the arc. Reese Ross led the Cavs with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sloane Keszler had 13 points and three assists.
The Cavaliers won the rebound battle 29-17. Each team had 11 turnovers.  
The Flier girls are now 4-4 on the year and will play in doubleheader matchups this week: Tuesday at Deuel, Friday, host McCook Central/Montrose and Saturday at Parker, 12 noon first tip.
