Dells power stops Fliers
Too late for last week
FLANDREAU – Dell Rapids topped the Fliers 41-16 on the gridiron Friday night.
The Quarriers held a 262-147 advantage in total yards of offense.
Tash Lunday ran nine times for 46 yards and Lane Johanson had 27 yards on nine attempts. Both players scored a touchdown.
Tanner Christenson was 2-of-7 for 49 yards with an interception through the air. Lunday (27 yards) and Johanson (22) had receptions.
On defense, Lunday logged 10 tackles, Johanson seven and Braden Peters five.
“Dell Rapids is a very talented team and possibly the best team in 11A which makes it a tough matchup,” said FHS coach Derek Genzlinger. “We did some good things on both sides of the ball, but I was hoping to see more out of our guys tonight. When facing such a talented team you have to play with more effort and sense of urgency and we did not do that.
“Our young guys have gotten their feet wet with two great opponents to start the year and we have another one in Sioux Valley next week. We need to improve on not letting the game come to us and attacking more on both sides of the ball.”
Lose to tough SV team
FLANDREAU – Speedster Jaxton Schiller had a monster night as third-ranked Sioux Valley beat Flandreau 34-12 on Friday night.
He carried the ball 12 times for 224 yards and scored four times.
Sioux Valley finished with a 462-194 advantage in total yards of offense, including 420-166 on the ground.
Schiller got it going with an 18-yard scoring scamper at the 7:58 mark of the first. Mckade Rentsch ran in the two-point conversion.
Flandreau got on the board in the second period after Ethan Hoffman returned the kickoff 71 yards to place the Fliers on the Cossacks’ nine yard line. After a running gain of two, tight end Tash Lunday caught a 7-yard pass from Tanner Christenson at 10:04 mark. The PAT run was stopped.
Schiller counter with TD rushes of 9 and 35 yards, with Rentsch running in the two-pointer on the latter.
Conner Logan’s 1-yard TD plunge with 3:59 showing on the clock made it 28-6 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Schiller got loose from 64 yards out with 8:54 remaining in the game for the Cossacks’ final scoring of the night.
The Fliers’ second scoring drive started on their own 38. They used a running game to work their way to the 11 yard line where Christenson handed off to Tathan Headrick, who ran it cross the goal line with 3:34 to go. Again, the PAT failed and the score stood at 34-12 in favor of the Cossacks.
