Cardinals end regular season with two wins

Posted

In front of a great crowd for their final home game, the Flandreau Cardinals were solid in each phase for the Cornbelt League victory over the Canova Gang, 4-3.
Drew Weber did his part on the mound, claiming the win with his six inning start. He allowed only three runs, two of which were unearned, struck out one and walked a pair. He gave way to Jordan Gesling clinging to the one run lead. Gesling came in and fanned eight of the nine batters he retired for his three inning save. He did walk the first two batters of the 9th inning to make it interesting, but back to back strikeouts followed by the final ground out secured the win.
Offensively, Flandreau collected 10 hits. Ben Ihrke, Jake Patterson, Aiden Ladd, and Bret Severtson all had two hit games with Keith Cutler and Derick Veldkamp accounting for the other two. Ihrke scored two runs with a walk and a double. Patterson scored a run with a double and drove in a pair. Cutler and Ladd each drove in a run with Veldkamp scoring once.

Flandreau pulled away late with Salem making a 9th inning rally which wasn’t quite enough for the Cubs. The Cardinals picked up their second win of the week, 12-8.
Zach Weber got the start on the mound, throwing four innings, allowing two runs, striking out one Cub batter, and walking five. Bret Severtson earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief and striking out three before giving way to Aiden Ladd for the win two innings. Ladd struck out three and allowed six runs, three were earned.
The story of the game for the Cardinals was their pop at the plate. They combined to hit four home runs and two ground rule doubles. Tanner Harris was a perfect three for three at the plate with a single, double, home run and two RBI. Aiden Ladd also had a three hit game with a single, double, home run, and driving in a pair. Jordan Gesling and Bret Severtson added the other two home runs for their only hits of the game. Jake Patterson had two doubles and drove in one.
The Cardinals now begin District tournament play on Saturday in Dell Rapids. They will play the Hartford/Humboldt Woodducks at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon.
