The All-School play this year in Flandreau was once again a hit.
This year’s production of “Emma! A Pop Musical” took center stage over the past weekend, entertaining attendees with the modern take on Jane Austen’s classic novel.
The musical features Emma, a senior, who feels compelled to insert herself into her fellow classmates’ love lives. Her own happiness could be on the line though as she works to match up others. The program features a dynamic soundtrack of hits from iconic female artists, including The Supremes and Katy Perry, offering a fresh twist on a beloved story.
Flandreau High School Principal Kristi Fischer, who continues to both direct and head up the theater program, said the students couldn’t have had a better weekend.
“They brought great energy on Thursday night, and then elevated their performance even more on Friday — and the audience responded in kind. All these students are really great to work with, and I appreciate the effort and commitment they bring to every show.”
Seniors Lyla Thompson and Clara Kelm, who have long starred in local theater performances, “rose to the occasion with both their singing and acting in their respective roles as Emma and Harriet, which helped set the tone for their fellow castmates. Their fellow seniors Makenzie Kuyper and Karissa Nolan went all out to create two memorable comic characters to delight the audience, as well,” Fischer added.
The four seniors have been strong leaders in both the theater and oral interp programs throughout the entirety of their young acting and speech careers. Fischer said the class will definitely be missed as they move on to graduation. She added that she is fortunate, however, to be able to work with their underclassmen next year and looks to continued leadership from juniors Ben Kulm and Abe Streitz “whose performances were essential to the success of this show.”
