Battling a brush fire

Posted

Flandreau firefighters battled high winds Saturday as they worked to gain the upper hand on a brush fire at the tree dump on the southeast side of Egan.
City officials said a hotspot likely remained after a prescribed burn a couple of weeks ago despite heavy snowfall and recent rains.
Unaware there might be any issues, City Council President Cody Chamblin said someone dumping trees off earlier that day likely sparked the new fire. Chamblin stood alongside neighbors Saturday afternoon, just south of the ballfield in town, and watched firefighters work quickly to keep the flames from spreading closer to homes along the southern edge of town.
Burning has been either banned or discouraged much of this this spring as dry conditions and high winds persist across the area.
