Posted

For the first time in three years, the Flandreau Cardinal amateur baseball team was in the championship game in the South Dakota Class B Amateur state tourney.
They squared off with Corn Belt League opponent, Dell Rapids Mudcats, and were downed in six innings.  The Mudcats had hot bats while the Cardinals committed errors.

Title game
MITCHELL – The Dell Rapids Mudcats defeated Flandreau 16-1 in six innings in the Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament final Sunday afternoon at Cadwell Park.
The Mudcats outscored their five opponents a combined 56-7 in the tourney.
Dalton Lehnen went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs, including a grand slam that made it 11-1 in the fourth inning.
Former Renner Monarch teammates Kris Regas and Dallas Schneiderman squared off on the mound.
Regas tossed a six-hitter, striking out eight without issuing a free pass.
Schneiderman gave up 11 runs – six earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts over 3 2/3 frames.

Semi-Final
MITCHELL – Drew Weber pitched 7 1/3 solid innings and Drew Demers had a big game at the plate to help Flandreau defeat Dimock/Emery 5-1 in the semifinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Cadwell Park.
Weber allowed just one run on six hits and three walks with one strikeout. He threw 105 pitches. Bret Severtson retired all five batters he faced – two via strikeout – to close it out.
“Drew Weber stepped up in a big way for us on the mound,” said Severtson, Flandreau’s manager. “To get that type of performance from him was huge and puts us in a good spot to head to (the championship game).
“We did enough offensively to win tonight but will need to cash in on more of those opportunities to get it done (Sunday).”
Demers finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, scoring twice.
Severtson was 2-for-4 and Grant Hieb 2-for-5.
Severtson doubled to open the third and Demers followed with a two-bagger of his own to get the Cardinals on the board.
Following Beau Severtson’s sacrifice and Jacob Patterson’s walk, Hieb stepped up with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Flandreau doubled its advantage in the fourth.

Quarterfinal
MITCHELL – Flandreau defeated Alexandria 5-3 in the quarterfinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Thursday night at Cadwell Park.
The two-time defending champion Angels have dropped just two of their past 26 games at the state tourney – both against the Cardinals. They also fell in the 2018 quarterfinals. Both losses ended 12-game winning streaks.
“That’s as intense as amateur baseball gets,” said Flandreau coach Bret Severtson.
“We did what we needed to do to score early and put pressure on a team like that. (We)worked out of some jams and made just enough plays.”
On Thursday, Drew Demers singled to lead off the fifth. Beau Severtson followed with a bunt single.
Catcher Jacob Patterson came through with an RBI double to give Flandreau a 3-2 lead.
Grant Hieb was hit by a pitch.
Tim Huber was beaned with two away, forcing in Severtson. Patterson scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
Alexandria’s Cole Wenande doubled and scored following a pair of wild pitches in the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Cardinals put up a pair in the opening frame.
Patterson singled and Keith Cutler reached on an error.
Patterson sprinted home on a passed ball, before Aiden Ladd came through with an RBI double to make it 2-0.
Tyson Gau (reach on HBP) and Jordan Gau (fielder’s choice) scored in the third to pull the Angels even.
Flandreau’s Bret Severtson entered in the fourth and allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk over 4 1/3 innings.
Dallas Schneiderman tossed a hitless ninth, striking out one and walking one.
Starter Drew Weber gave up one run – unearned – on one hit and a pair of walks. Zach Weinandt gave up one run – unearned – on two hits with a K over the next 1 2/3.
Demers ended up 2-for-4 and Patterson and Demers both 2-for-5 at the plate.
For the Angels, Jed Schmidt took the loss after surrendering five runs – three earned – on six hits with six Ks and a walk over five frames. Ethan Davis tossed four scoreless innings to close it out.

MITCHELL – Dallas Schneiderman tossed another state tourney gem and the Cardinals pounded out 15 hits in the 11-0, seven-inning defeat of Mt. Vernon in the second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Monday night at Cadwell Park.
The former Renner Monarch, 42, struck out five and walked one, surrendering just three singles.
“Capitalizing early offensively is always big,” said Flandreau coach Bret Severtson. “Then we were able to add some more as the game went on.
“Dallas is a guy who you flip him the baseball and stay out of his way.
“He did exactly what we expected him to do.”
Grant Hieb was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Tim Huber, Keith Cutler and Bret Severtson each logged two hits and a pair of RBIs.
