Just after extremely warm winter weather and just before the arrival of a spring “snow event” the Colman-Egan Hawks took to a couple indoor track and field meets to open the 2024 season.

A new activity is set to join football, volleyball as well as track and field as a sanctioned high school sport in South Dakota. Esports has been surging in popularity over the past decade — the streaming audience is expected to hit 1.4 billion in 2025, and several South Dakota colleges have established esports programs.

College Men's Basketball

The South Dakota State men are heading to Omaha and will be going up against a familiar face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jackrabbits drew the No. 15 seed in the east region on Sunday and will be going up against former SDSU head coach T.J. Otzelberger and the Iowa State Cyclones on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.

It wasn’t always pretty, but the South Dakota State women advanced to the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament on Saturday afternoon as they pulled away from Omaha in the fourth quarter and beat the Mavericks 66-53.

After a bit of a slow start, South Dakota State went on a 24-0 run to close out the first half and that propelled the Jackrabbits to a 79-63 victory over Oral Roberts in the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament on Saturday night.

High School Girls Basketball

The Flandreau Fliers advanced to the consolation championship in the State Class A Girls Basketball Tournament, defeating the Hanson Beaverettes 65-33 at the Dacotah Bank Center on Friday afternoon.

High School Girls Basketball

The Flandreau Fliers were upset in the quarterfinals of the State Class A State Girls Basketball Tournament, falling to the sixth-seeded Tea Area Titans 52-47 at the Dacotah Bank Center on Thursday night.

The Wall Eagles denied the Colman-Egan Hawks the chance to play in the SDHSAA Class B Girls State Tournament with a 75-44 win over the local girls.

The Flandreau Fliers smothered Hill City as they used a 58-30 win in the SoDak 16 to return to the Class A state tournament in Brookings next weekend.

The Hawks led after one quarter but it would be a big third quarter by Dell Rapids St. Mary as the key to ending Colman-Egan’s boys’ basketball season. The Hawks lost in the first game of Region 3B play, 69-50.

The Flandreau Fliers boys’ basketball team won the first game of Region 2A but couldn’t get past Sioux Valley and closed their season last week in Region 2A play. The Fliers finished the season with a record of 14-8.
