Robert G. Ullom, age 90, of Flandreau, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
Memorial and Masonic services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau, South Dakota.
Robert Glen Ullom was born May 13, 1932, at Sioux Falls, SD. He moved with his parents Glen and Esther Ullom to a farm east of Flandreau when he was 9 years old.
He attended Flandreau grade and high schools and was active in Debate and FFA. He attended a semester at SD State College in Brookings. He worked 2 years at the PV Grain Elevator in Flandreau and then started farming.
He met Lois Margaret Tompkins at the roller rink at Lake Campbell, SD, and always joked that he had to learn to play Pinochle before he was allowed into the house on the farm. Bob and Lois were married Oct. 11, 1953, in Brookings, SD. They had 4 children.
Bob was a member the Flandreau Masonic Lodge and served in all the offices. He was appointed to the Board of Custodians of the SD Grand Lodge and served many years as Chairman. He served as District Master twice and a term as Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of SD.
He was a supervisor on the Moody County Conservation District for many years and served as treasurer of the State Association of Conservation Districts for twelve years, started the Endowment Fund for the organization and served as State Director. He served as Flandreau Township Clerk for 28 years until moving to town.
Bob served on the local Cenex board of directors many years and was elected to represent SD on the Regional Cenex Board where he also served a term as Secretary/Treasurer.
He has been a member of the Second Presbyterian Church since 1948 and served as Elder, Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Advisor, and sang in the choir his whole life. He served the Presbytery of SD on the Committee on Ministry and was chair of the Care of Candidates Committee. In 2002 he was the Elder Delegate from the Presbytery of SD to the General Assembly held in Columbus, Ohio.
He enjoyed singing, acting and building sets in many community musicals over the years with his role as Judd in Oklahoma and the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof being the most memorable.
He was an auctioneer for 25 years, and also enjoyed the 30 winters that he and Lois spent as “snow birds” in Arizona.
He is preceded by his wife Lois and parents Glen and Esther Ullom, granddaughter Alison and grandson Mat Ullom.
He is survived by four children, Rev. Dr. Dave (Judy) Ullom, Estherville, IA, Steve (Joan) Ullom, Flandreau, SD, Linda (Pat) Thielsen, Chandler, AZ, and Brenda Johnson, Parker, CO, 9 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren, and sister, Roberta Wagner, Sierra Vista, AZ.
