After years of conversations and planning for a bridge over the Big Sioux River to connect the powwow grounds north of Flandreau with a campground and parking area on the other side of the waterway, work has finally begun. Construction crews have begun clearing timber and other obstacles to set the bridge footings in place. Visitors, campers and dancers wanting access to the powwow grounds over the years have otherwise needed to walk or travel a small section of busy highway to get from one side of the river to the other, creating safety concerns. The bridge will be an incredibly welcome addition to the Flandreau Santee Sioux Powwow complex.
