Flier teams at two area meets last week

VOLGA – The Flandreau Flier girls tied with host Sioux Valley at the Brace-Hopfinger Relays on Tuesday, April 9 in Volga.
Flandreau and the Cossacks each scored 101 points. Great Plains Lutheran won the invite with 106 points.
The Flier boys placed ninth with 39 points. Elkton-Lake Benton won with 146 points.
For the Flier girls, four first place finishes were record.
Morgan Sheppard was the winner of the 400 meter race in a time of 1:02.90, Faith Wiese won the 800 meter run, 2:24.32 and a relay team of Wiese, Kiley Westberry, Josie Hamilton and Sheppard won that event in 4:20.22. Sadie Iott took the triple jump with a leap of 32’2”.
The boys did not have a title winner but had a couple of third place finishes. Brenton Westberry in the 200 meter dash (24.04) and the 4x400 relay team of Westberry, Ben Kulm, Micah Otto and Paul Parsley with a time of 3:41.20.

ELKTON – A smaller group of athletes participated in the Vince Relays in Elkton on Saturday where only four teams participated.
Host Elkton-Lake Benton won both team titles. The boys scored 298 points and the girls 184.5. DeSmet was second and the Fliers were third with team scores of 126.5 and 124.5.
The Flier girls recorded several first place wins and three were double gold winners.
Wiese was a double winner taking the 800 and 1600 meter runs in times of 2:26.55 and 5:24.29 respectively.
Winning the 400 meter run was Kiley Westberry (1:05.41) and also as a member of the 4x800 relay along with Diamond Roy, Hailey Lahr and Dreamer Cournoyer. Their time was 11:18.27.
In the jumps, Sadie Iott won the long jump (14’1”) and the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, three quarters of an inch.
Flandreau’s boys lone first place win came in the 4x800 meter relay ran by Tanner Reed, Wyatt Kontz, Nate Hobbie and Sam Schmidt in a time 9:34.72.
