Dates set for Flandreau Barrel racing series
The stands sit empty at the Moody County Fairgrounds and the dirt in the arena has yet to be worked ahead of a busy rodeo season but riders can’t wait to restart the barrel racing series. A lot of work the past couple of years has gone into bringing the arena back each spring after as the group of mud volleyball players each fall during the Moody County Fair create hazardous conditions for riders and their horses.

Moody County is extending a gesture of appreciation to Kaitlyn Latham Knutson and the Flandreau Barrel Racing Series by offering a discounted rate for the use of the arena at the fairgrounds this season.
The decision follows a conversation about how much work Knutson, her husband Lance, and the rest of their crew do to ensure the rodeo grounds are maintained, with their own equipment, throughout the summer months. The work takes hours and the arena needs to be leveled routinely.
“I’m committed to providing barrel racers with a top-notch venue that promotes speed and efficiency,” Knutson shared with the Moody County Enterprise, emphasizing her passion for the series.
Commission Assistant Marty Skroch highlighted the significant work required to restore safe footing conditions for horses and riders following the popular mud volleyball showcase during the Moody County Fair. The event results in substantial dirt displacement due to water usage, necessitating the restoration efforts and the Knutsons have helped to rebuild the base each year since the sport was added to the Fair line-up.
The work needing to be done however, is to an extent, more a labor of love than actual work. The Knutson, Latham and Loiseau families, along with Marda Olson and many others that have helped host the races over time, are longtime rodeo families wanting to see the tradition and love for the sport continue for generations to come.
“It’s a joyous few hours where I reconnect with people I rarely see. I strive to organize races that bring joy to barrel racers in the area,” said Knutson, reflecting on her commitment to fostering the events.
The Flandreau Barrel Racing Series kicks off the 2024 season in Flandreau on May 7th, with time slots available starting at 4:30 p.m. PeeWees run at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Opens at 7 p.m. The series will feature 10 additional racing dates throughout the summer, focusing solely on competitive races without prize incentives. Each night will host two 5D open races.
Visitors are encouraged as the event is a fun evening for spectators and riders alike. Anyone interested in participating or seeking further information, contact Knutson at (605) 864-8294.
