Flandreau’s Michael Witte posted three wins in the consolation bracket to place third at 145 pounds as the Fliers finished 30th as a team with 19 points.
Witte won a 3-0 decision over Landon Sivertsen, a senior from Miller/Highmore-Harold to capture third place.
Earlier in the day, Witte won 4-1 over Philip’s Colby Fitch in the consolation quarters, and then, won an 8-0 major decision over Joey Wheeler of Potter County in the semis to advance to the third-place match.
On Friday, Witte won by decision over Eli Mines from Custer/Edgemont, 7-2. He then ;ost to Hot Springs’ Kody Hagen by a slim 2-1 decision.
Witte’s coach Travis Ahrens said, “Michael didn't hang his head and he proceeded to battle all the way back through the wrestle backs.”
He then won by major decision over Tucson Freeman from Mobridge-Pollock, 9-0.
Then on Saturday, Witte won 4-1 over Philip’s Colby Fitch in the consolation quarters, and then, won an 8-0 major decision over Joey Wheeler of Potter County in the semis to advance to the third-place match.
Ahrens felt good about his other performers at the state meet.
Caleb Dietrich, went 1-2 at the state tourney, gaining some great experience in his first trip said Ahrens.
Hunter Witte and Preston Keith each went 0-2. “Hunter again, gained some valuable experience and Preston, as a senior, got a great taste of the state tournament experience,” said Ahrens.
Their matches are as follows:
Caleb Dietrich 106 lbs.
Hunter Witte 113 lbs.
Preston Keith 160 lbs.
Canton defended the team title easily with 165 points to Winner’s second-place 111.5.
