Earlier this summer, Governor Dennis Daugaard visited Flandreau to present a plaque to the Janklow family in front of the William J. Janklow Community Center in honor of Gov. Janklow and his impact on the community. A sign was also placed in front of the building, with a paragraph featuring Janklow’s accomplishments as a four-term governor.
Through a state-run project, former governors are being honored in the towns where they are from and made a lasting impact. The city of Flandreau donated the land for the sign. Mayor Mark Bonrud said Janklow was instrumental in bringing the community center to Flandreau. Janklow also had a hand in the city's aquatic center, which was funded in part by a grant approved by him.
In October 2012, 10 months after Janklow died of a months-long battle with brain cancer, city officials held a dedication ceremony to rename the community center after him.
