Family business buys Flandreau insurance agency

Posted

A family insurance company based in Faulkton has purchased First Flandreau Insurance Agency.

Brian King, with King Insurance Agency in Madison, will operated the Flandreau branch. His mother, Beverly, bought an agency in 1995 and formed King Insurance Agency in 1999. She is still in business in Faulkton. Her three sons operate agencies in Madison, Brookings and Sioux Falls.

“We’re all one business with multiple locations,” Brian King said.

The Flandreau branch will take the King Insurance Agency name. “Locally, nothing will change other than the name,” he said.

The sale of the branch, previously owned by Scott and Nancy Gusso of Madison, was effective Jan. 1.

Leslie Hurley will continue to be in the Flandreau office as the local manager and agent, and LeRoy Tunender, a former owner of the business, will come back to work as an agent.

“I will be coming over there as well as my brother (Dan) that’s in Sioux Falls,” King said of the Flandreau location.

He plans to expand with life and health insurance, along with the coverage for home, auto, farm, crop and business that the business has been doing.

The family was interested in the Flandreau agency because of its proximity to the other King locations, he said. “They had a good agency there. They opportunity was there. We think Flandreau is a great community, and we’d like to be involved in that.”

The business was originally part of First National Bank in Sioux Falls at the Flandreau branch and is within the bank building with its own outside entrance.

Tunender said he started working at the agency in 2003 and bought it in 2006. He eventually sold it to the Gussos, but is happy to be back.

“These guys are nice to work with,” he said.

Brian King said the King Agency, an independent Trusted Choice Agency, wants to be more visible in the community.

“We’re a customer-first business, very service oriented, a family business. We’re excited about getting into Flandreau and the opportunity that affords for us,” he said. “We plan on being there long term and make a positive impact on the community.”

The agency, which has 16 employees at its five locations, is licensed in South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska.
