Changes at area campgrounds

Posted

As warmer temperatures return, campers looking to make summer reservations at Flandreau City Park or at the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal RV Park might want to note a few changes.
In Flandreau, the nightly rate for campers has gone from $12 to $20 to better reflect the market and the demand for spots in the park along the Big Sioux. Also new is the maximum stay time — there did not used to be a maximum stay other than the park shutting down for the season entirely. It is now a two week maximum stay.
“The main reason that we are implementing the two-week stay policy is due to the high demand that the campground has seen over the last couple of years,” said City Administrator Cohl Turnquist.

“Additionally, a new registration system has been put in place at the campground to assist the City with administration of campground policies and procedures.”
Across town and just south of the Royal River Casino and Hotel complex, the tribal RV Park and Campground is getting its own share of updates, although these include updated and improved utility services and Wifi.
Tribal and casino officials say that the improvements are simply overdue and primarily basic services with some cosmetic improvements. An official reopening date for the RV lot has not yet been determined.
Colman’s RV lot and campground on the other hand, is already busy ahead of the official summer travel season with no changes expected at those sites. The Colman campground, adjacent to the highway running through town, is typically a busy place throughout the summer, just steps from a ballpark, playground, city pool, and golf course.
