Flandreau School District voters in April will decide between seven candidates for three spots on the board.
Incumbent Brian “Pedro” Johnson is seeking another three-year term. Six other candidates that will be on the ballot for the at-large seats are Jamie Hemmer, Kevin Christenson, Blake Bergjord, Kevin C. Burshiem, April Eastman and Amanda Taylor.
Board members Tricia LeBrun and Matt Lacey said they would not seek re-election after both serving nine years.
Flandreau City will not have an election April 10, but one new council member will take office.
In Ward 1 for the city, incumbent Karen Tufty will retain her seat unopposed on the council for a two-year term. Also in Ward 1, Bart Sample turned in a nominating petition for the four-year term and was unopposed.
In Ward 2, incumbent Ron Smith decided not to seek re-election, opening up the four-year term to newcomer Jason Unger.
Incumbent Bob Pesall sought another four-year term in Ward 3 and was unopposed.
A petition for candidate Jessica Hovland was thrown out because information in the candidate declaration area of the paperwork was incomplete, said Karen Gundvaldson, interim finance officer.
Gundvaldson called state election officials on Friday and consulted with city attorney Paul Lewis. Lewis said, “I couldn’t find a solution so it had to be rejected by the city’s finance officer.”
Hovland intended to challenge Tufty in Ward 1.
In other county races,
Mayor Gloria Van Duyn will seek a second term unchallenged for her two-year seat. Ward I representative Brad Schroeder will go unchallenged for his two-year term as will Mike Preheim for a one-year term in Ward II and Ben Elhoff for a two-year position in Ward III.
Richard Nord was appointed to replace Dickey and will run for the one-year term. Todd Olson, Jennifer Ahrendt and Jami Alberts also will be on the ballot for that spot. Damm is unopposed.
