BROOKINGS — SDSU Extension has invited producers to the 35th annual Draper Winter Wheat Meeting.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. CDT Aug. 22 at the city of Draper auditorium. It is free to attend, and registration is not required. A meal sponsored by area businesses will be served prior to the program.

A popular event among winter wheat producers, the meeting provides the most recent SDSU Extension winter wheat variety trial results and other regionally relevant research. Anyone interested in wheat production is welcome to attend.

“Wheat variety selection is a big part of crop success year to year, and the data that is presented at this meeting can help farmers make this yearly decision,” said Clarence Winter, SDSU Extension agronomy field specialist. “This event also provides farmers access to several individuals that have experience with the challenges of wheat production.”

This year's speakers include Madalyn Shires, assistant professor and SDSU Extension plant pathology specialist, and Aaron Kromann, an agronomy service representative at Syngenta. They will discuss diseases that were prevalent in South Dakota winter wheat during the 2024 growing season, fungicide options and treatments.

Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension state climatologist, will provide a climate update for South Dakota. And Sunish Sehgal, SDSU associate professor and winter wheat breeder, will discuss the 2024 winter wheat variety trial results and ongoing research efforts.
