Rain causes flooding; delays Flandreau Fridays

A third day of torrential downpours this past week meant a tough call for the Flandreau Fridays committee, but early the morning of June 21st, the decision was made to move this year’s multicultural celebration back to this year’s rain date of June 28th.
The schedule for the evening will remain the same with a start time of 5 p.m. and the weather this week looks to be perfect for the early summer event.

In addition to the downtown cultural events, the local VFW Post 3351 nearby will host “Civics”, an open house, and an all-American meal will be on the menu. Kids can show off their history knowledge to win a prize, hamburgers and hot dogs will be for sale, and Veterans will be showing off their Veterans Center, which is available for the public to rent.
Rain poured down throughout the week this past week, flooding out not only the annual Flandreau Fridays event, but local and regional ball tournaments, family gatherings, tee times, and other events. As a result, field and water conditions that earlier this year were still in a drought-like state are now saturated and near or at flood stage.
City Park in Flandreau is largely under water as is the golf course in Colman. Some rural roads have areas of wash out, basements have flooded, and area fields just starting to see significant growth have early crops under water.
Local meteorologists report 6.21” of rain this past week alone, 7.19” for the month of June so far.
