Memorial Day services to be held

Four Memorial Day services will take place in Moody County on Monday, May 29, to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the United States military.

The services are scheduled as follows:

Colman: The Memorial Day program in Colman will begin at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Frank Walker, a retired master sergeant of the United States Marine Corps. The Colman Girl Scout Troop will perform the flag folding ceremony. Roger Fritz will do roll call of all the veterans buried in the four cemeteries.

Colman-Egan School Band will provide the musical selections during the program. In case of rain or inclement weather, the program will be moved into the fire hall.

Egan: Memorial Day Services will be held in Egan at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park.  The Egan American Legion Post #97 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #97 will host the event.

The Colman-Egan Band, under the direction of Ronda Olson, will perform. Riley Blissmer will play taps. Colman-Egan School students will do various readings.

Master Sergeant Frank Walker, a graduate of Colman High School, will give the Memorial Day address. Walker served in the United States Marine Corps from 1979 until his retirement in 2000.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating. In case of rain or inclement weather, the program will be held at the Egan United Methodist Church. Refreshments will be served at the Senior Citizens Center following the program.

Flandreau: The Memorial Day service in Flandreau will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Union Cemetery. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the community center. The keynote speaker will be Scott Ross, who has taught math and physical science at Flandreau Public High School for the past seven years.

Ross graduated from Pueblo East High School 1982 and left for the Army, where he attended Basic Training in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. followed by paratroop training in Fort Benning, Ga.

He attended 91B combat medic training at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas. After initial military occupations specialty training, Ross began his special forces training at Fort Bragg, N.C. After receiving his special forces tab in 1987 and was qualified as a special forces medic. He was assigned to Special Forces Operational Detachment, 525, B Co, 5th Bn. 19th Special Forces Group as the detachment junior medic.

During his service in Special Forces I, he was deployed to the Republic of the Philippines, The Kingdom of Thailand, The Republic of Vanuatu and Japan. Ross attained the rank of staff sergeant. Ross left Special Forces in 1999 and received his degree from the University of Phoenix and his teaching degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

Pastor Ann Spitzenberger will give the benediction.

During the Memorial Day potluck, members of the local National Guard unit will give flags to anyone who wants a new one as well as take any old or damaged flags to properly dispose.

If anyone wants to volunteer to set up the flags, meet at the courthouse at 7:15 a.m. Monday morning.

Trent: Trent services will be hosed by the Hjellman-Anderson Post 122 Trent American Legion and Legion Auxiliary. At 8:30 a.m., the Naval Service will take place at the bridge. The memorial service will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Trent gym.

Services at the Trent Cemetery will be at 10:00 a.m. and at the Salem Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Services at the Oslo and Bethany cemeteries will begin at 11:00 a.m. and at the Nelson and Riverview Cemeteries at 11:30 a.m.
