Fire burns Colman home
Posted
Brenda Wade Schmidt
A Colman family lost their home to fire last week and community members are rallying to raise money to help with expenses.
Firefighters were called to the Wade and Emily Quick resident on Northeast Third Street about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 12.
“Smoke was coming out of the top windows. There was visible flame,” said Jason Landis, Colman fire chief. The Flandreau fire department was called to assist.
Crews had the fire out and left the scene at about 4 a.m.
The two-story house was gutted upstairs and the ground-floor level had water and smoke damage, Landis said.
Emily Quick and the couple’s four children were able to get out of the house. She was up with the baby at the time and heard popping and cracking noises upstairs, Landis said.
The fire started in a bedroom shared by two of the girls, but all of the children were sleeping downstairs at the time. The family hasn’t been using the bedroom this winter because of the cold weather, he said.
Wade Quick, who also serves on the Colman Fire Department, was at work in Volga at the time of the fire and came home to be with his family.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, Landis said.
The family spent the night at a neighbor’s house.
Colman friends have been helping replace clothing for the family of six by reaching out through Facebook and have started a fund at Great Western Bank for donations to the Quick family. Money can be deposited at any Great Western location.
