County Fair and Wacipi to highlight week of celebrations

It is a big week in and around Moody County for annual summer events. The Moody County Fair this year includes events all week starting Monday with a Companion Animal Show at the Extension Office and a 4-H Family Appreciation event.
The fair officially kicks off Wednesday at the Fairgrounds with bake sale entries and 4-H exhibits. Thursday features livestock shows, a parade with Lavonne Jepsen as parade marshal, a tractor pull, a City Band performance, a pork loin community feed, and a 4-H dance.
Livestock showing continues through Friday, along with the annual pie contest and a celebration with vendors, bounce houses, and more from 4-8 p.m. Mud volleyball games have been replaced this year by a bean bag toss tournament starting at 7 p.m. Friday.

Events with the Fair this year run through Saturday.
Friday evening meanwhile, marks the start of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Wakpa Ipaksun Wacipi. The annual powwow runs July 19-21, and all are welcome.
The Wacipi committee stated on its event page that the wacipi is held “to engage in a peaceful community gathering of fun and laughter. A celebration of our culture, our Dakota way of life.”
Each day features Grand Entries, which are worth attending, especially if you have never experienced a powwow, and dance and drum contests. This year includes a youth drum singing contest, a men’s and women’s singing contest, and fireworks Saturday night at dusk.
Families from across the region look forward to both local events each year as they spend a beautiful summer weekend with family and old friends, enjoy incredible food vendors, shop unique retail vendors, and meet new acquaintances. The forecast, as this issue went to print early Monday, called for temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 80’s for a high each day, nearly perfect summer weather for all of the events scheduled.
