Flandreau city employees can look forward to increased deductibles and out-of-pocket maximum payments on Dec. 1.
The Flandreau City Council approved the changes at its Oct. 2 meeting.
City administrator Don Whitman explained that the city’s current Dakotacare $1,000 deductible plan was facing an 18.31 percent premium increase.
“That was a lot more than we budgeted for health insurance,” Whitman said.
After looking at plans from Avera and Wellmark, Whitman said the decision was made to enroll in Dakotacare’s $1,250 deductible plan.
The premium increase for the new plan was 11.73 percent, but Whitman said that the city had budgeted for a 12 percent increase.
The current maximum out-of-pocket on the city plan is $2,000 for an individual and $4,000 for a family. Under the new plan, the maximum out-of-pocket will be $2,750 for an individual and $5,500 for a family.
Council member Dan Sutton said that with the city picking up a portion of the expense, “It’s still a very attractive benefit plan for the employees.”
The council also approved a two-year vision insurance renewal with VSP. On Jan. 1, 2018, rates will go from $7.69 to $8 per person per month, a 4 percent increase.
Whitman said the city budgeted for a 5 percent increase.
