Cardinals split games with Canova, Salem

FLANDREAU – The Flandreau Cardinals split their two games this week, falling to the Canova Gang 9-3 on Wednesday night but defeating the Salem Cubs 14-1 on Thursday night.

Wednesday
Canova 9, Flandreau 3
Canova opened the game with a run in the top of the second inning before Flandreau answered in the bottom of the second inning. JaColby Anderson doubled to lead off the second before Dallas Schneiderman put runners on the corners with a single, leading to Tim Huber’s sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Canova went back in front with a run in the top of the third inning and jumped ahead 3-1 with another run in the top of the fourth inning.
Flandreau rallied with a Zak Wallner single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wallner stole second base before Beau Severtson singled and Jacob Patterson drove in a run with a single of his own before Austin Koenig tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly.

But Canova took the lead for good with a five-run seventh inning and added another run in the eighth for the final 9-3 score.
Severtson started the game, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits and three walks with nine strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Anderson allowed one hit in 0.2 innings. Luke Gassman allowed an earned run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts over two innings.
Flandreau had 12 hits in the game. Anderson went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Wallner went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Severtson went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Schneiderman, Josh Edlund and Curt Anderson each went 1-for-4.

Thursday
Flandreau 14, Salem 1 (7 Inn.)
The Cardinals rolled from the opening pitch as Patterson led off the game with a double in the bottom of the first inning. Patterson later scored on Keith Cutler’s single and Anderson gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the following at-bat.

Anderson added another run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning but the Cubs got a run back in the top of the fourth. Flandreau responded with a pair of runs on Brian McGuire’s double, a run on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Gassman to make it 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.
Calvin Hegg and Gassman opened the fifth with RBI singles before a run scored on an error and Tison Burggraff, Cutler and Anderson each drove in runs with singles. Cutler scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
Wallner allowed one earned run on three hits with a strikeout over six innings. Burggraff allowed two hits over one shutout inning.
Cutler went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. McGuire went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Calvin Hegg went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Anderson went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Grant Hieb went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Patterson went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Huber went 1-for-3. Koenig went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Gassman went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.
Cutler stole two bases while Severtson and Hegg each stole a base.
