City crews this past week went street by street in Flandreau spraying for mosquitoes thanks to a state grant for mosquito control. About 200 communities across the state were awarded funding for the effort after heavy spring rains and flooding provided ideal breeding grounds for an explosive mosquito population. It can be tough yet to spend much time outdoors as swarms of the insects make it a challenge and bug spray, along with other preventative individual measures, remain sold out at local stores.
The South Dakota Department of Health has advised all residents to take proactive steps to reduce mosquito populations, including eliminating any standing water on properties.
