Poppy Days will take place in Flandreau on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6. Poppies are available for purchase at the First National Bank, the Flandreau Bakery, Maynard’s, Dollar General and Tractor Supply.
The Buddy Poppy is a flower closely related to the VFW and symbolic of the bloodshed during World War I.
In a note from VFW Commander-in-Chief Brian Duffy, he writes that with the centennial of WWI and Memorial Day ceremonies coming up this month, Buddy Poppies will be a fixture at a number of events across the country.
The poppies are worn as a reminder of those who fought and died for America and as a symbol of sacrifice.
Community members are asked to give what they can and wear the poppies in honor of those who served and continue to serve our country.
