Student and class receive award

March 2 marked the 20th anniversary of the National Education Association’s Read Across America, the largest reading celebration in the country.

Students at Flandreau Elementary celebrated with various activities in each classroom from Feb. 27 to March 3.

The South Dakota Education Association held the Read Across America Photo Booth Contest throughout the state that began on Feb. 1.

Classrooms and libraries received the tools to create photo booths and take photos of students at the booths.

All photo entries submitted by Feb. 16 were uploaded to the SDEA Facebook page and anyone could vote his or her favorite photo booth picture.

After all the votes were tabulated, Miesha Pedraza-Felix of Ms. Kortney Nelson’s second grade class in Flandreau garnered the most votes and was named the winner on March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Miesha is shown above in front with the Cat in the Hat hat. Behind her is Ms. Nelson and in far back is Mary McCorkle, SDEA President.

On Tuesday, March 21, SDEA President McCorkle and the Cat in the Hat paid the class a visit. McCorkle spent time reading three different Dr. Seuss books with the kids.

Each student was also able to take a photo with the Cat in the Hat.

In the end, she awarded the class with two $50 Barnes and Noble gift cards to use to purchase books for their classroom because “there’s nothing more important than reading.”
