May filled with bike events in Flandreau to encourage safe rides

Posted

All ages will be able to enjoy biking activities during May, in an effort to increase interest in a bike path through Flandreau.
The events will focus on safety, enjoyment and activity that will kick off the week of May 13 with events, including a simulated bike lane on Pipestone Avenue. The temporary lane will help people understand what a permanent lane would look like if it is added to the street and what education is needed to keep riders safe.

Surveys put out by the Healthy Hometown group show that many people support a bike lane that connects the west edge of town with the city park but that there are safety concerns, said Kelley Ramsdell, a committee member. Surveys are due May 1 and will be used to gauge the community’s interest.
Bicycles are treated like a vehicle and have the right to be on the road, said Police Chief Zach Weber. Bikers must also obey the rules of the road, just as motorists do, he said.
The Healthy Hometown committee is supporting a bike lane because it shows a community invests in its citizens, it will help with a safe route to school for children and it will increase activity among residents, Ramsdell said.
The week of events also will include a bicycle rodeo for kids, a family ride to school, a lunch ride for adults to the casino, a ride-your-bike-to-work event and Tour de Flandreau. Details or each event are being finalized.
