Flandreau City administrator interviews set for next week

Two candidates for the top city job will visit Flandreau next week for face-to-face interviews.

The city council plans to bring the finalists for the city administrator job to town and will give them tours and allow them to meet with the public, said Dan Sutton, council president. While the names of the finalists haven’t been released, the council narrowed the field down from three to two after initially talking to them by phone. Eleven people applied for the job.

The first candidate will fly in and visit Flandreau beginning March 18, Sutton said. That candidate, a man, will tour the community the following day, meet with staff, attend the city council meeting March 19 and meet the public at a meet and greet on March 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at city offices. The event will include social time followed by a question and answer at about 7 p.m.

The second candidate, a man from South Dakota, will arrive March 22 for an interview and tour. His meet and greet will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. March 24 at city offices with a question session starting about 10 a.m.

“Following that, the council hopefully will have enough information to decide if they want to make an offer or not,” Sutton said. The council likely will meet the following week on April 2 to decide, with hopes of having a new administrator in place in May.

City administrator Don Whitman will retire by May 1 after six years in the position.

Sutton said at the March 19 meeting, the council will get results of a wage study which can help determine if the administrator salary is in line with similar communities. “It’s always important to know if we’re competitive.”

During the interview process, the council wants to give the candidates as much information about the community as possible. Both candidates are excited about the opportunity, he said.

“I think the process has gone well. The initial interview by phone and the reference checks put both of these two candidates at the top of the pack,” he said. “When people get to meet these two candidates, they will see similarities, but there are differences.”
