Expansion another step closer to reality

Posted

Excitement is building for the planned expansion of the Boys & Girls Club of Moody County.
Local families and Club supporters turned out this past week for the second of two public meetings to look at and discuss the sizable new addition to the club. The addition and renovation, which will be constructed off the southeast corner of the current facility, will include a full-size gym, concessions stand, meeting room, additional youth programming space, a new teen room and staff offices. The growth is also expected to allow for better allocated and designated areas for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten, 1st-3rd grade.
Lead gifts to make the project happen are already at $1.5 million. Club officials are looking for partners to help fund the remaining $500,000.

Why Club officials and its supporters feel it’s needed: When Boys & Girls Club of Moody County first opened its facilities’ doors in 2011, there were 150 youth being served. There are now over 450 children ranging from JK-12th grade that use the Club on a regular basis. The membership fee is $25 per year, per child to ensure it remains affordable for everyone.
The actual cost of one child per year is $2,500, according to Club officials.
“Moody County continues to be one of the only affordable, facility-based, youth-
focused organizations in Flandreau and Moody County,” Club officials stated.
And they’ve got some incredible backing from dedicated community members. Awards were given this past week to three longtime Flandreau-area supporters. More on the recipients and the awards they were given in a future addition.
