There’ll be some new hand-painted mugs brightening up local homes, thanks to the efforts of Flandreau Public School’s 4th graders. For the second year in a row, the local VFW post, VFW 3351, has partnered with Color Me Mine out of Sioux Falls, to provide mugs and all the art supplies needed for the 4th graders to make a patriotic mug, as part of the community’s observance of Memorial Day.
While children may keep the mugs, they’re encouraged to give them as a gift to a veteran, or the family of a veteran, in recognition for the sacrifices made for our country. The 4th graders choose their own patriotic theme and decoration.
Mrs. Amanda Ahrens, the Elementary Art Teacher, provides a lesson on Memorial Day, in addition to painting techniques, for the class. “The students get a civics lesson, an art lesson, a project they really enjoy, and a mug to take home – not a bad deal,” says Bridget Flannery, commander of the local VFW. “We’re very grateful for the school’s continued support of this program,” Flannery added.
