BROOKINGS – The spring track season hit full stride as the Flandreau Fliers took a few of their athletes to compete at the Scott Underwood Invitational at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on April 1.
For the boys, the Fliers finished 19th with eight team points.
Micah Otto had the lone top-five finish for the Fliers recording a high jump of 5-10.00.
“Junior Micah Otto launched into the year with a remarkable PR (personal record) of 5’10, and last year his best was 5’4”,” said Flier coach Owen Parsley.
“He almost cleared 6’; just barely knocked it down on his third attempt. I’m amazed at his work ethic, focus, and ability, and can’t wait to see him progress all season long.”
The Fliers girls finished 10th with 25 team points.
The 4x400 meter relay team had the top finish for the Fliers as Faith Wiese, Kiley Westberry, Morgan Sheppard and Josie Hamilton finished second with a time of 4:18.39.
“Last season, our 4x400 didn’t approach 4:16 until the region meet in the middle of May, and they already ran a strong opener at 4:18.39,” said Parsley. “It was a great way to kick off the season. Shout out to Josie Hamilton for stepping up into the relay as an alternate. I’m excited to see how this relay squad of speedy gals does this season.”
