Fliers compete at Estelline, First Dakota Relays

“After more than a week off from competition due to challenging spring weather, I was encouraged by how the Flier tracksters and fieldsters got back after it in the run, jumps, and throws,” said Flier Head Coach Owen Parsley.
The Fliers participated in only two meets last week.

ESTELLINE – Flandreau boys were sixth and the girls were seventh at the Estelline Alumni Meet on April 23.
Coach Parsley said, “Brenton Westberry blasted an amazing time in the 400 meter dash (51.98) which earned him first, but also puts him at number five all time on the Fliers boys 400 list.”
He also added that Wyatt Kontz took 16 seconds off his 1600 meter run and earned fourth place, 5:22.39.
Tanner Reed came in third in the 3200 meter run (11:42.39) and Westberry, Paul Parsley, Micah Otto and Benjamin Kulm came in second in the 4x200 relay (1:38.96).
Flandreau’s girls came in seventh with 58 points. Leading the team was the foursome of Faith Wiese, Kiley Westberry, Ella Hoffman and Morgan Sheppard who came in first in the 4x400 meter relay (4:20.01).
“They soundly buried the closest competition by ten seconds, showing how these gals always bring their best into every event and relay,” said Parsley.
He also said Hoffman came back strong from a previous injury.
“She had a great 100, 200, and opened well for that 4x400 relay,” he said.
Another top performance came from the 4x800 meter relay team of Westberry, Josie Hamilton, Sheppard and Wiese. “Their 10:17.63 puts them ninth on the all-time leader list,” he said.
“That relay will only continue to crank down that time.”
Others placing in the top five were Wiese second in the 1600 meter run (5:19.39), Hoffman second in the 200 meter dash (28.41) and Westberry finished third in the 400 meter run (1:05.19). Sadie Iott came in third in the triple jump (31-11.75).

YANKTON – The Fliers took a few track and field athletes to compete at the First Dakota Relays held on Mount Marty University campus on Thursday, April 25. Here, the Fliers see Class AA, A and B opponents.

Participating at Yankton may “possibly push better times and marks (heading) into Howard Wood,” said Parsley.
No team scores were kept at the event but Flandreau turned in several top-five finishes.
The Flier boys’ Medley relay team of Benjamin Kulm, Micah Otto, Paul Parsley and Brenton Westberry finished in third place with a time of 3:46.42.
“This medley time puts them at #10 in the state for Class A. All ran well – especially notable splits from Paul Parsley in the 400M at 53.5 and Brenton Westberry blazing a 2:02 in the 800 anchor leg,” said Parsley.
“The same four guys rounded out the day by earning 5th with their best 4x400 relay time of 3:39.67, putting them at 16th in the state for Class A.”
In the field events, Otto came in seventh in the high jump at 5’7” for the Flier boys.
On the girls’ team, Faith Wiese finished second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:13, which Parsley said was her third best time ever.
“Wiese also anchored our medley relay (Hoffman, Sheppard, Westberry, Wiese) which blasted an impressive time of 4:24.95, putting them 3rd in the state for Class A!
The Fliers Medley relay team of Hoffman, Westberry, Sheppard and Wiese finished second with a time of 4:24.95 behind a strong Sioux Falls Christian team (4:18.81).
Hamilton finished fourth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:27.82.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Hoffman, Westberry, Wiese and Sheppard finished fifth with a time of 4:17.66.
The Flier team were to be in Madison last Friday, but weather cancelled that meet and also Saturday’s meet in Elkton.
“Despite the crummy wind, temps, and rain, our guys and gals continually trust the process and put in quality work at practice and every meet opportunity,” said Parsley.
“As we approach the championship portion of the season with Howard Wood, Conferences, Last Chance, and State, our coaches and athletes remain focused on quality efforts and mindsets,” he concluded.
