Will ask for roof bids; set 2025-26 calendar

Flandreau School Board members learned that the first day of school in the fall of 2025 will be Tuesday, August 19 with a 1:30 dismissal when they met at the regular board meeting on Monday, January 13.
The calendar is much the same as this year’s. The last day of school will be May 14. Christmas vacation will be a 1:30 pm dismissal on Friday, December 19 with teachers returning to an inservice on Monday, January 5 and students returning on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Three snow make up days are Monday, January 19, Monday, February 16 and Monday, April 6, 2026. Spring break is Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16, 2026.
Approval was given to the calendar.

They also approved replacing the roof on the high school gym and added an additional high school school track and field coach.
The high school gym is in need of attention as leaking is occurring in the corners of the roof. The board approved to advertise for bids to get this job completed this summer. Life expectancy of a roof such as those on the school’s buildings is about 30 years. RSA Architects will be paid $21,750 for their services.
Approval was given for an additional high school track and field coach to support three current coaches in that sport. Last year, there were 57 high school track and field athletes on the team. In 2023 there were 51 and in 2022 there were 61 out for track and field in the high school. These numbers do not reflect the junior high athletes.
Head Track and Field Coach Owen Parsley said 57 is a large number of athletes for three coaches to be in charge of since two of them are on the old practice field as throw and jump coaches and not on the track at all during practices and meets. He asked the board to consider the addition of another coach to help bring the ratio of coaches/athletes more in line with other sports.
The additional coach, yet to be named, will be paid $2913.
The board set Tuesday, April 8 as the date of the annual school board election. Two, 3-year terms currently held by Kari Burggraff and Dustin Headrick and one, 2-year term currently held by Brian Johnson will be open. Petitions for those interested in serving and wish to be on the ballot will be available starting the morning of Friday, January 31 and must be returned to the District’s Business Office no later than 5:00 PM on February 28.
