Selected to Junior Honor Choir

Two Flandreau junior high students will join 96 other singers from across the state at the South Dakota SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) Junior Honor Choir concert this weekend in Rapid City. Eighth grader Elijiah Pavlis, left, and seventh grader Ryker Headrick were chosen through recorded auditions. They both sing tenor and will be among the 23 tenors selected for the choir. Flandreau Middle and High School Choir Director Mrs. Malerie Yeaton, who is a member of the South Dakota American Choral Directors Association, had 11 of her students in grades 7th-9th audition for the honor last fall. (Only students whose director is a member of the SD-ACDA can audition.) While in Rapid City, Pavlis and Headrick will spend most of Friday afternoon and evening in rehearsals with the guest conductor, Colton Blake, from Fort Worth, TX. Blake is a secondary choral consultant and is widely renowned for his creative methods for student engagement, and his innovative approach to connecting with singers. He is a regular clinician for honor choirs and educator development sessions across the nation. The concert will be held at the Rapid City Performing Arts Center Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
