New electronic speed signs are being ordered for the south shore of Lake Campbell ahead of next summer’s beach and camping season.
As the area sees more and more visitors, drivers speeding past the beach in particular is of growing concern. The Lake Campbell Improvement Association had previously asked the county to consider speed bumps along 220th Street, especially close to Kattails Campground                                                                and Recreation Area. A follow-up conversation however, with the Moody County Sheriff’s Office, now has all parties agreeing to first try the electronic speed signs.
The signs, of which there will be two — one on the west side of the bridge for drivers heading east, and another somewhere between the Sportsmen’s Club and Kattails for drivers heading west, will be ordered through the Sheriff’s Office but paid for through both a highway safety grant and by the Lake Campbell Improvement Association and Kattails themselves. The nearly $10,000 will be paid through an 80 (federal highway grant)/20 (local entities) split.
Approval for the purchases was given at the last regularly scheduled meeting of the Moody County Commission.
The beach area of Lake Campbell lies in the most northwestern part of Moody County. The road is typically a 55 mph road other than in that particular area, the speed limit in and around the beach and bridge area is 25 mph.
